Toon Hearing aims to provide information about the support available to people in Newcastle who are D/deaf or Hard of Hearing. This includes information on support groups, captoned and subtitled theatre and cinema shows, and access to recent research on hearing loss. I am constantly looking at how to improve the website so please let me have any suggestions through the comments box below. I try to keep the website as up to date as possible but check out the Toonhearing Twitter page for daily updates.
Changes to Newcastle Deaflink
After 10 years of being part of Newcastle Healthy City, Deaflink is moving into the new financial year as an independent company with charitable status. New contact details can be downloaded here along with a full programme of events from March to August 2012.
New Sensory Issues Group
At the last meetings of the Newcastle Deafblind and Hard of Hearing Groups, it was agreed to merge and form a new Sensory Issues Group. This new group meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Further details of future meetings are available here.
Local Support Groups
There are a range of support groups that meet regularly in Newcastle. For more information on all of these groups, click on the 'Sources of Support' link on the left of this page. Alternatively, check out the Diary Dates in the calendar to the right.
Captioned, BSL and Audio-described Theatre
Most of the theatres around Newcastle have performances for major shows that are captioned, audio-described or have a BSL interpreter. Details can be found on the Theatres page here
Deafened Workers Experience of Work
A website has been established for Deafened people to share experiences of solving problems in a work environment. Check out the website and the associated research here.
